Interpreting Asia: challenges of developing training DVDs for Vietnam and China
This illustrated presentation looks at the challenges involved in introducing professional consecutive interpreting skills to English majors, who are used as bi-lingual interpreters in business and industry by managers in China and Vietnam. These managers wrongly assume that knowledge of a language brings with it skills in interpreting.
The project Interpreting Asia Interpreting Europe had the overall objective of improving the quality and provision of qualified personnel capable of international liaison in the target countries. In practice this meant offering human resources development to graduates, trainers of interpreters and employers of liaison interpreters.
The challenge facing the core partners - the Universities of Westminster (UK), Dublin City University (Ireland), Xiamen University (China) and Hanoi University of Foreign Studies (Vietnam) - was to produce training materials which are relevant and professional, but at a level low enough to be accessible the largely uninformed target groups. The DVDs illustrate core skills and ethics, including concentration and memory, note-taking, coping tactics, and cultural awareness. They provide what an independent evaluator called "exemplars of quality and best practice, particularly with regard to technical production, pedagogical value and accessibility".
